DIY Bleached Converse

17:40

I was looking through my closet earlier and I found a pair of my old cherry red high-top converse that I barely wore. They totally still fit and everything but the colour was way to bright for my liking, so I decided to give them a little makeover!
This isn't anything fancy or new - just your good ole' bleach.

Here's how they started out, all vibrant and bright as you can see

I took out the shoe laces (although you can also throw them in the bleach if you want to clean them up a bit) and got a tub, some bleach and gloves. Make sure you work outside or in a well ventilated place if you're ever bleaching something and protect your skin from coming in contact with the bleach as it is corrosive.

I started out not knowing how much bleach to add so I did about 1:1 ratio of bleach to water. I waited a few hours and the colour barely changed, so I just added tons more bleach. I couldn't tell you exactly how much I added but I ended up finishing my bottle of bleach (it wasn't close to full though).

After adding more bleach I just kept coming back to check the colour every hour or so. It took me about all day, because I started off with a  really weak solution, but once I upped the bleach, the process definitely went a lot faster. Once it reached the point I wanted, I took them out, rinsed them with lightly water and left them outside overnight to dry and absorb any final bleach. In the morning, I rinsed them with water and let them air dry.

Here's how they turned out! I love the pale colour and the contrast of the red string to the  new canvas colour. Definitely less bright and flashy :)

The converse logo and the word 'converse' on the inside of the shoe weren't affected by the bleach at all. The strings stayed their original colour as well, which I think looked pretty cool.
